Euro-MP calls for joint referendum on Euro and Constitution

Now the question for the EU referendum has been published the campaign to win the argument can begin according to West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne. However the Liberal Democrat MEP today urged Tony Blair to hold a referendum on the Euro at the same time to end the uncertainty for businesses in the UK.

Speaking today she said "For too long those of us who believe in the EU have let the euro-sceptic press inform the British public about Europe. It is time to settle the issue that has bedevilled British politics for the best part of three decades. The referendum gives us a chance to expose the myths and challenge euro-sceptics to paint a picture of the UK outside the EU. We have always argued that the European Union should only have influence over decisions that cannot be taken at local or National level. What the Constitution will do is make it clearer as to what should be decided at European Level and what should be left up to Member States. We need to resolve the debate on the Euro as well. British businesses have been left in limbo for too long. They do not know whether to prepare for the Euro or for life outside the Euro zone. We must end that uncertainty and there is no better time than on the same day that we ask the country to endorse the Constitution."

Ms. Lynne concluded "The publication of the bill to incorporate the Constitution into UK law comes as the EU has launched a new website to help people cut through the euromyths. The future of marmalade, smoky bacon crisps, yoghurt and model railways have all been threatened by Brussels, according to recent national newspaper articles. In fact none of these will be banned, but that does not seem to stop newspapers from printing such stories. Publishing this information is a small step towards countering myths and distortion spread by the eurosceptic press but a lot more needs to be done. If we can't have an informed debate about bendy bananas or the banning of DIY how can we have one about big issues like the euro or the European constitution?"
