Car tax should reflect environmental damage - Baker

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 22nd Jun 2005

Commenting on the Sustainable Development Commission's recommendation for a higher rate of Vehicle Excise Duty for the most polluting cars, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Norman Baker MP said:

"I welcome the fiscal changes suggested by the SDC and in particular the greater flexibility in banding gas guzzlers.

"The price of running a car should reflect the environmental damage it does. Gas guzzlers, such as many models of 4x4s, should pay more and cleaner cars should pay less"
