Labour have gone backwards on Kyoto - Baker

8.50.08pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 2nd Aug 2005

Norman Baker MP

Commenting on new DTI statistics to be published tomorrow which are expected to show a rise in the UK's carbon dioxide emissions for the third year in a row, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"These latest figures mean the UK has little hope of reaching the 20% reduction target for 2010, and we are now in danger of actually missing our Kyoto targets.

"None of Labour's policies inspire any confidence that these trends will be reversed. Tony Blair must come forward with policies to secure significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

"The Liberal Democrats' real alternative on the environment would see action on tackling emissions from traffic, aviation and energy use."
