Health Care Must Be Based On Need Not Ability To Pay - Goldsworthy

5.08.32pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 17th Aug 2005

Responding to calls by the new President of the Royal College of Surgeons for patients to be made to take out social health insurance Julia Goldsworthy, a Liberal Democrat Health Spokeswoman, said:

"Whilst it is important to explore new methods of funding for the NHS, we must ensure that health care is provided on the basis of need not ability to pay.

"Universal access to health care for the richest and the poorest must be protected.

"Government ministers should reassure the public that the NHS will continue to remain free at the point of delivery."
