More information needed on infections - Webb

10.42.48pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 26th Aug 2005

Steve Webb MP, Lib Dem Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

Commenting on the publication of Clostridium Difficele infection figures, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Steve Webb MP said:

"The fact that cases of this infection have shot up shows how far the problem has previously been hidden. Ministers have been constantly playing catch up on the issue of hospital infections because successive Governments refused to take the problem seriously.

"MRSA has grabbed the headlines but it is not the only bug on the rise in the NHS. These figures show the need for urgent action to reduce all hospital infections. More needs to be done to discover the true scale of infections. Only with the right information about all infections can we begin to tackle this problem."
