Commenting on the publication of the economic lifestyle survey that shows that pensioners spend an average of £819 per year on house maintenance, Liberal Democrat Local Government Spokesperson, Sarah Teather MP said:

"With 30,000 pensioners dying from the cold every year, it is enormously important that pensioners have warm and secure homes, yet they may be tempted to put off repairs because they simply can't afford it.

"Pensioners should be allowed to take their Winter Fuel Payment in the form of discounted home improvements to boost energy efficiency.

"A cut in VAT on home improvements would make it cheaper for everyone to keep their home warm and secure."
