Ruling on prisoners' voting rights welcome - Oaten

4.14.57pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 7th Oct 2005

Banning prisoners from voting breaches their human rights, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled. This ruling looks likely to force a change in British law on parliamentary and local elections.

Mark Oaten MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, said: "The Liberal Democrats have a longstanding commitment to lift the ban on prisoners voting. Today's ruling is not just about rights. It is about ensuring that prisoners return to their communities as responsible citizens. Telling offenders that they have no part to play in our democracy is no way to end the cycle of crime."
