ECGD response to anti-bribery consultation promising but serious loopholes remain

1.01.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 22nd Oct 2005

Norman Lamb MP, Lib Dem Treasury Select Committee Member

Commenting on the initial response to the changes to the ECGD's (Export Credits Guarantee Department) anti-bribery and corruption procedures, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary Norman Lamb MP said:

"The response to the consultation is a step in the right direction back towards the more stringent anti-bribery provisions originally introduced in May 2004.

"However this does not go far enough - serious loopholes still exist which could be exploited by unscrupulous operators so we do not achieve the objective of stamping out corruption. This further period of consultation must lead to an effective code which achieves this objective."
