John Hemming MP has asked The Prime Minister how many times departing cabinet ministers should receive a tax free payment of around £18,000 for loss of office in a 12 month period.

"As ministers leave through the revolving door that leads to the cabinet office," he said, "they get a tax-free payment of around £18,000. The second departure of David Blunkett asks the question whether this is fair. Given the frequency at which ministers resign from his government and rejoin it, it is unfair for people to continually get tax free golden goodbyes."

"Given that David Blunkett is getting a tax-free payment he ends up better off not doing his job during this 12 month period than he would had he continued working throughout the time."
