UCAS figures show impact of fees

6.15.00pm GMT Thu 10th Nov 2005

Commenting on early figures from UCAS that show a 2% fall in UK university applicants, Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, Edward Davey MP said:

"This is the strongest sign yet that fees harm access to university education.

"If UK student numbers fall universities will become more and more reliant on the income from higher fee paying non-EU students.

"Ministers say they want more people to go to university but their variable fees policy has undermined that key objective in its very first year."
