Commenting on the announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister to change the Local Government Pension Scheme and scrap the 85 year rule, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Spokesperson, David Laws MP said:

"This announcement underlines what a dog's dinner the Government has made of public sector pension reform. By continuing to allow one group of public sector workers to retire at 60 up to 2048, but now scrapping it for others, the Government has made it harder to achieve a coherent policy on long term pensions reform.

"It is now more clear than ever that we need an independent review of public sector pensions that will be free of Government meddling."
