Continuation of Tory - Lib Dem consensus on climate change welcome

10.04.00am GMT Fri 9th Dec 2005

The Liberal Democrats today reaffirmed their commitment to a bi-partisan consensus with the Conservatives on climate change.

Commenting as the Conservatives announce the appointment of Peter Ainsworth as their new Environment spokesman, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Norman Baker MP, said:

"I am pleased that David Cameron has confirmed that he wants to continue with the consensus on climate change, which we have initiated.

"Climate change remains the biggest challenge to politicians. Normal politics is not delivering the solutions we need, and we have to develop a new kind of politics to meet the challenges with us now. v"I welcome the appointment of Peter Ainsworth and I look forward to working with him. Hopefully over the coming months other parties and the Government will leave party politics behind and get behind this cross party consensus."
