Chancellor seems to find "sorry" to be the hardest word

11.19.00am GMT Wed 7th Dec 2005

Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, responding to Gordon Brown's failure yet again during his appearance today at the Treasury Select Committee to apologise for getting his growth forecast so badly wrong, said: "The Chancellor seems unable to say sorry for getting his forecasts so badly wrong. Rather than digging in, he should eat some humble pie and admit he got his growth predictions wrong.

"To avoid having these statistical arguments in the future, Treasury forecasts should be subject to independent scrutiny with the whole process being subject to the National Audit Office."
