Herceptin provision "hit-and-miss"

6.18.00pm GMT Wed 21st Dec 2005

Commenting on a High Court challenge by a Swindon woman after her local Primary Care Trust (PCT) refused to provide her with Herceptin, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary Steve Webb MP said:

"The current system is a complete mess.

"Women with breast cancer have no idea where they stand. One day Patricia Hewitt makes an announcement that gives them hope, then the next day another woman will receive a letter saying her PCT is unable to fund the treatment.

"Decisions on access to potentially life-saving drugs need to be fair and transparent, not the apparently hit-and-miss process that patients are faced with today."
