Commenting on the new rail fares that come into force today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary Tom Brake MP said "Above inflationary increases, at a time when overcrowding on the network remains severe, are a slap in the face for hard-pressed commuters.

"These fare rises send out the wrong signal at a time when the Government are seeking to get more people onto trains and out of their cars."
