Keetch calls for robust contingency plans to tackle bird flu threat5.56.12pm GMT Tue 21st Feb 2006 Paul Keetch, MP for Hereford has been speaking with a major county chicken breeder in light of the increased threat that avian flu may arrive in the UK. Paul Keetch commented "The government urgently needs to ensure that we are fully prepared to manage any incidences of bird flu that may occur in the UK. DEFRA must put in place robust contingency plans to bring birds indoors if necessary and ensure that all holdings of birds are identified, even where there are fewer than 50. However, it would be wrong to take pre-emptive measures which could actually damage the Farming Industry considerably, particularly the free-range and organic sectors". "I have also questioned the government on how they are planning to dealing with this increased threat. It is vital that contingency plans arranged in preparation for the arrival of bird flu in the UK ensure that the Farming Industry in Herefordshire is adequately protected".
