Government should set zero waste target - Huhne

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 19th May 2006

Responding to the publication of a report by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) on the municipal waste market, Chris Huhne MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said "It is five years since the Waste Strategy of 2000 was published, and while there has been some progress, household waste is still growing by 3% a year and we are still burying over 75% of our rubbish.

"The taxation system must be used much more cleverly to tackle the problem of waste management.

"Fiscal incentives should be tailored to offer the financial incentives to reuse and recycle materials. The Chancellor has had nine years to deliver incentives such as these and has failed."
