Home Office must be broken up - Clegg5.39.19pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd May 2006
Speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Chief Police Officers today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP, today called for the Home Office to be broken up. Mr Clegg said "The Home Office's combination of institutional overstretch, legislative overload and political interference is conspiring to undermine confidence in our criminal justice system. "When an organisation is overburdened by an unmanageable number of tasks, things go wrong. "The debate on the breaking up of the Home Office should now begin in earnest."
