Massive gap between rhetoric and reality on human rights - Moore

6.03.14pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd May 2006

Commenting on Amnesty International's annual report condemning the UK Government's record on human rights, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Michael Moore MP said "This report dramatically exposes the selectivity, faltering progress and inconsistency of our approach to human rights.

"Security must be incorporated into the application of human rights, not used to override them.

"Inaction on Darfur, Guantanamo, and rendition by the CIA, expose the yawning gap between rhetoric and reality.

"A strong, consistent commitment to universal rights is in all our interests and will enhance, not undermine, our long-term security."
