Millstone of debt for graduates no way to fund universities - Teather6.03.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 6th Jun 2006 Commenting on Gordon Brown's speech at the launch of a Centre for European Reform (CER) pamphlet on university funding, Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, Sarah Teather MP said "This latest idea floated by the Chancellor about lifting the cap on university tuition fees is extremely worrying. "Ministers' complacency about the impact of tuition and top-up fees must be alarming for students, future students and their parents. "We are already seeing the results of the government's misguided tuition fees policy -students are working more and studying less during university to make ends meet and a third of graduates rely on their parents for financial support. "Our universities need to be properly funded but putting a millstone of debt around the necks of upcoming generations cannot be the answer."
