Responding to comments by Nato's top commander General James Jones that member countries should provide reinforcements to the mission in southern Afghanistan, Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Menzies Campbell said "Afghanistan is a serious test for the credibility of NATO.

"If all of its members are not willing to make a proper contribution then the alliance will be badly damaged.

"NATO must fulfil its responsibilities."
