The Liberal Democrats today passed a motion which champions the fair trade philosophy, as well as giving councils more powers to invest ethically.

Councils and charities are currently only able to take account of value for money when making investments. Liberal Democrat measures will also them to consider wider social and environmental factors.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, Edward Davey MP said "These measures demonstrate our commitment to socially responsible and sustainable investment, which is one of the marks of a civilised society.

"It is only right that charities and councils should be able to take account of ethical, social and environmental concerns as well as profitability, when making decisions."
