ID card claim difficult to believe - Clegg

11.02.44pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 25th Sep 2006

Commenting on Liam Byrne's comments that the cost of the ID card scheme could be cut 'quite substantially', Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said "It is difficult to believe anything the Government says about the cost of ID cards given that in the past they have either tried to hide the costs or spectacularly underestimated them.

"This is merely the latest ministerial wheeze in a belated attempt to address growing public hostility to a wasteful and unnecessary white elephant."
