Serious offenders should face court not fines - Clegg

6.06.09pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 29th Sep 2006

Commenting on reports that violent criminals could be handed on-the-spot fines of up to £100 rather than be taken to court, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said "In yet another rush to appear tough on crime, John Reid is in truth planning to let the perpetrators of serious crimes off the hook.

"Offenders whose actions leave victims in their wake should be brought to court, not let off with a one-off fine.

"If the Government were serious about giving victims a proper say in dealing with everyday crime, they should do more to expand Community Justice Panels, where offenders are forced to confront victims and make amends."
