Darfur stands at the precipice - Kramer

11.56.42pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 10th Oct 2006

Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Secretary, Susan Kramer MP used yesterday's return of Parliament to strongly urge the international community to help pull Darfur back from the brink of disaster.

She said "Once again Darfur stands at the precipice. Both the EU and the UN must use targeted sanctions against the Sudanese Government before a crisis descends into catastrophe. Yesterday I tabled an Early Day Motion to this effect."

"We cannot be seduced by hints that the Sudanese Government may allow the UN to provide training and logistical support to African Union troops. Meaningful peace in the region requires the presence of UN peacekeepers.

"This is a desperate situation. It is imperative that we continue to push for decisive action from the international community."
