Government computer systems 20 years behind schedule - Cable

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 12th Oct 2006

Figurers obtained by the Liberal Democrats, which were published today, show that IT projects undertaken by Gordon Brown's department are almost 20 years behind schedule.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP said "These figures show just how bad the Government is at running IT projects.

"With the Treasury, who are allegedly the guardian of Government efficiency programmes, finding it so difficult to keep IT projects on schedule, it would be utter madness to go ahead with further large IT projects such as ID cards."
