Trade crucial to ending child poverty - Kramer12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Oct 2006 Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Secretary, Susan Kramer MP has challenged the Government to get serious about child poverty. Speaking in Parliament she said "October's Month of Action to End Child Poverty is desperately needed. "Today's debate on street children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo highlights the plight of children who suffer abject poverty in developing countries. "How do we expect to be able to achieve the Millennium Development Goals when the US and the EU continue to pursue their own narrow self-interest? "Unless we restart the Doha trade talks, the developed world cannot hope to keep its promises to the world's poorest countries. "These countries need trade, they need fair markets, and they need our commitment to their future."
