Separating asylum seekers from children must end - Lord Avebury

3.55.31pm GMT Wed 1st Nov 2006

Liberal Democrat Peer, Lord (Eric) Avebury, has written to the Children's Commissioner and the Chief Inspector of Prisons asking them to ensure that failed asylum seekers who are breast-feeding are not separated from their children.

This follows the Home Office's refusal to undertake an investigation into the practice, which has occurred on at least two occasions.

Commenting, Lord (Eric) Avebury said "Given that these are highly unlikely to be the only cases, it is shocking that the Government will not agree to an investigation.

"The prison service much be much more vigilant to make sure further cases do not occur."
