Government failing to tackle extraordinary rendition - Lord Garden

6.45.09pm GMT Tue 7th Nov 2006

The Liberal Democrats have attacked the Government and the Conservatives for failing to crack down on extraordinary rendition, following a vote in the House of Lords this evening, during the third reading of the Armed Forces Bill.

Commenting, Lord (Tim) Garden said "The Government has resisted every attempt to legislate about the use of UK airfields for extraordinary rendition flights.

"While Dick Cheney may think 'waterboarding' is all right for interrogating suspects, we know it is torture and we must ensure our military are not unwittingly involved.

"It is sad that neither Labour nor enough Conservatives were prepared to stand up to be counted on this fundamental issue."
