Government must prevent further distress to farmers - Huhne

6.50.02pm GMT Tue 7th Nov 2006

The Liberal Democrats have tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) attacking the Government for failing to improve the Rural Payments Agency, ahead of the next round of farm payments.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defra Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said "Before we start another Parliamentary year, the Government must be straight with farmers about the prospects of payment and update them on progress at the Rural Payments Agency.

"It's crucial that the Government doesn't make promises it can't meet - as it did last year and as the Conservatives have this year.

"Instead, they must commit to delivering substantial part payments as soon as possible."
