10.03.12pm GMT Thu 23rd Nov 2006

Lord (Willie) Goodhart, Liberal Democrat Shadow Lord Chancellor, has been appointed chair of the House of Lords Select Committee on Delegated Powers and Regulatory Reform.

As a result Lord Goodhart is stepping down as Liberal Democrat Shadow Lord Chancellor and is succeeded by Lord Thomas of Gresford.

Lord Goodhart said "I am delighted to have been appointed to chair this Select Committee, which plays an important constitutional role in ensuring that legislation gets proper scrutiny in Parliament.

"I am of course sorry that this means my departure from the front bench on which I have served for the last eight years, but I leave my post in good hands."
