Following John Reid's emergency statement today on Alexander Litvinenko's death, Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell said "We must not rush to judgement on this matter or prejudice the police inquiry or any possible future prosecution.

"If it were to emerge that Russian authorities at any level had a hand in the death of Mr Litvinenko the consequences would be extremely serious. It would represent a major breach of British sovereignty and an unacceptable failure to observe proper respect for British interests.

"No country which seeks a seat at the top table can be associated with state terrorism."
