Public inquiry needed into July 7 bombings - Clegg

9.39.19pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 9th Jan 2007

The Liberal Democrats have repeated their call for a public inquiry into the July 7 bombings, following reports that the head of MI5 told MPs a day before the attacks that the country faced no imminent terrorist threat.

Since Labour came to power in 1997 there have been a total of 16 public inquiries.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said:

"With each new revelation about the days and weeks leading up to the bombings of July 7, the Government's resistance to a full public inquiry becomes more and more untenable.

"Today's revelation only strengthens the case for an inquiry into this matter of vital public interest."
