Resignation of Bangladeshi caretaker President welcome - Avebury

12.57.50pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 12th Jan 2007

Commenting on the resignation of the Bangladeshi Caretaker President, Liberal Democrat Peer and chair of the International Bangladesh Foundation, Lord Avebury said:

"I welcome the decision of the Chief Adviser of the caretaker government in Bangladesh to resign. He was the main obstacle to free and fair elections.

"Much more still remains to be done, including an agreement by the parties on a new polling day that will allow time for a free poll to take place.

"In addition, the gross irregularities on the electoral register - which allowed 13 million more names to be on it than the number of eligible voters - must be corrected."
