Commenting on today's [Tuesday] report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons, finding systemic problems in immigration short term holding facilities, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Nick Clegg MP said:

"The inspector's report confirms what has been apparent for some time: that for the Government these people are out of sight and out of mind.

"Any society should be ashamed when people are treated like this just because they are to be deported.

"Unacceptable conditions in these removal centres are made all the worse by the fact that so many deportees find themselves detained for months or even years because of the bureaucratic meltdown in the Immigration and Nationality Directorate."
