Pre-election opportunism will not solve Union debate - Campbell1.00.38pm GMT Tue 16th Jan 2007
Rt. Hon. Sir Menzies ('Ming') Campbell CBE QC Commenting on the three hundredth anniversary of the Union, Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell said: "The 'Faustian bargain' between the nationalists and the Conservatives is based on short term electoral advantage and opportunism in this pre-election period. "Once devolution has bedded down in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland we should have a calm and rational debate on the role of MPs from these devolved nations at Westminster. "As Donald Dewar, the architect of the Scottish Parliament, made clear - 'devolution is a process not an event', for Westminster as well."
