New powers for coroners welcome - Hughes1.42.56pm GMT Tue 30th Jan 2007 Commenting on the Department of Constitutional Affairs' proposals for new powers for coroners, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP, said: "Often lessons learnt from one tragedy can prevent another.
"New proposed powers for coroners to require information about actions taken after inquests to prevent future deaths will be a welcome development of the role of coroners in England & Wales. "These plans are a way of doing more to make sure loss and suffering are not in vain." Applicability: this item refers to England and Wales. Due to devolution, detailed policy may be different in other areas of the UK.
