World Cup bid: Government needs to learn Olympic lesson - Foster8.06.31pm GMT Mon 12th Feb 2007 Commenting on the publication of the Government's assessment of the feasibility of hosting the 2018 World Cup, Liberal Democrat Shadow Sports Secretary, Don Foster MP said: "Hosting the World Cup in 2018 could bring huge benefits to the UK and the public recognises this. "Tessa Jowell is right that Olympic costs overruns don't appear to have undermined widespread support for a World Cup bid. "But the lessons learnt from Olympics cash crisis are writ so large in this report that it's hardly a vote of confidence in her planning for the 2012 Games. "In demanding the implementation of Lord Burns' review, the Government appears to be offering a gun to the head rather than a pat on the back for the Football Association." Applicability: this item refers to the UK.
