SOLIHULL MP CONDEMNS GOVERNMENT PLANS TO SELL ID CARD DETAILS11.20.31pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 10th Apr 2007 Solihull MP, Lorely Burt has condemned government plans to sell access to personal information stored on the ID cards database. Banks and other businesses could be asked to stump up millions for data stored on government computers in order to offset the estimated costs of £540million a year for running the controversial scheme. Lorely Burt MP said:
"This is a desperate measure by government to try to balance the books and stop taxpayers money draining away on this costly and completely unnecessary project." How many people would have supported the introduction of ID cards if they knew that the intention was to sell their personal details to businesses? "Ministers should scrap this plastic poll tax and invest the money on extra police and beefing up our border controls. Instead they are trying to make a fast buck by selling every bit of personal information that they collect from us."
