MP warns about New Tax Refund Internet Confidence Trick

12.24.19pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 27th Jul 2007

Hi Tech Entrepreneur MP, John Hemming, (who chairs the New Media All Party Parliamentary Group) has warned people to be wary of a new Internet Confidence Trick. "A new bunch of net conmen (and possibly con women) have sent out emails claiming that they are the Tax Man and are offering a tax refund. Anyone being told they are due a tax refund should be wary. The web site they refer to asks for credit card details including the security code on the rear of the card."

John Hemmings MP

"It is important that noone gives over their credit card details in this way. This is a major con. I have referred this to the police, but if anyone has given their credit card details they will need to cancel their credit card immediately and get a new number."

"The site is hosted in the USA and I shall be contacting the host to see why they are allowing this." ENDS
