LIBDEM CANDIDATE CALLS FOR CULL OF PLASTIC BAGS FROM LOCAL SHOPS

6.18.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 25th Sep 2007

West Worcestershire's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Richard Burt is calling on local traders in Worcestershire towns and villages to band together to end the use of plastic carrier bags.

Mr Burt made the call following the publication of his environment report and recommendations to local councils last week.

Richard Burt

"Responses to our constituency wide environment survey told us that Worcestershire residents were very concerned about the environment but didn't like the idea of a tax on plastic bags. Only 21% were in favour, so we need to find a local solution to the pollution caused by the endless production of the plastic throw-away carrier bag.

"We get through 17billion plastic carrier bags each year in the UK. That's the equivalent of 300 per person and the cost to the environment is devastating.

"Modbury in Devon was the first town in Britain to cull the carrier bag. More than 40 shops were persuaded six months ago to abandon their use completely and switch to alternative re-useable 'bags for life' made from cotton, hessian, string or corn starch.

"Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire has recently followed suit, and a further 50 villages and towns are exploring similar initiatives.

"This would provide an ideal opportunity for traders, town and district councils to band together to deliver a real benefit to the environment by culling the plastic carrier bag. There is even a Worcestershire bag supplier recommended by Modbury campaigners.

"I urge anyone who wants to make a difference to talk to their local councillors and traders and I would be happy to assist in any local campaign."
