SOLIHULL MP SHOWS SUPPORT FOR DISABLED CHILDRENS CHARITY11.14.18am GMT Tue 30th Oct 2007
Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt is backing a Bill in Parliament to give support to carers of disabled children. The Disabled Children (Family Support) Bill 2007 will be launched by leading charity, Every Disabled Child Matters. This would give disabled children and their families a legal right to short break care, helping them to lead ordinary lives. The need for a short break service is essential; a recent survey found that eight out of ten carers have felt close to, or reached breaking point because of a lack of support. Mrs Burt has already signed a motion in parliament supporting the Bill, and will be attending the launch event for the Bill in Westminster next month. Lorely Burt said: "Families reach crisis point not because they are carers, but because they are forced to care without any support. "Respite care would greatly benefit the families of disabled people, and I support the view that they should be given this as a well deserved legal right."
