BURT BACKS BILL TO HELP MODERATE EXCESSIVE DRINKING9.56.00pm GMT Tue 4th Mar 2008
Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has added her support to a Bill in Westminster calling for all pubs, bars and clubs to reintroduce smaller wine glasses for bar sales. The Bill has been introduced to counter the growing trend towards offering only larger 175ml and even 250ml size glasses of wine. Lorely Burt MP said: "My concern is that the withdrawal of small glasses in so many pubs and bars is a conscious decision by some operators to encourage people to 'trade up' and buy bigger sizes. "The reality is that people often do trade up and I am concerned about the impact on drinking habits, particularly for women. "Many people think in terms of how many glasses of wine they have had to drink, rather than specific volumes. For this reason I believe that we should ensure that all pubs, bars and clubs which sell wine offer a 125ml measure, as well as the larger sizes, so that consumers can choose this smaller volume if they wish to.
