Lorely Burt Urges Residents to Sign up to Organ Donor Register

9.54.49am GMT Wed 3rd Mar 2010

Today, Solihull MP Lorely Burt, is urging more people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Campaign.

Currently there are over 10,000 people in the UK who are in need of an organ transplant in order to save or considerably enhance their quality of life. Approximately 3,500 organ transplants were carried out last year in the UK, but there is still a critical shortage of organs available for transplant, resulting in 3 people dying every day before they get the organs they desperately need.

90% of the British public say they support organ donation, yet to date only 16.4 million, just 27%, have signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register. The campaign is aimed at promoting public awareness about NHS Organ Donor Register so that millions more, who simply have not got round to signing up, will register in order to save and transform many more lives.

Speaking from Westminster today, Lorely said:

"I whole-heartedly support the NHS Organ Donor campaign as many people are dying needlessly each year, simply because most of us feel it is too morbid to discuss the possible use of our organs should we die.

"None of us want to consider the prospect of death before we've led a full life and reached a ripe old age, but unfortunately for those waiting on organ transplant lists this is the reality they must face everyday.

"Organ donation is the ultimate selfless act a person can do to ensure that their death is not in vain. This is why as many people as possible should go online and register today and help save many lives."
